It’s been pretty quiet on this blog for a few months! I just came back to tell you that… surprise! I have a brand new blog!

I’ve been working on the concept for a while now, which is why in some of the previous posts I said I was looking to switch to more lifestyle and writing related posts. If you’ve noticed, I’ve also been saying I’ve been working on some writing projects that have been taking up all my time and I couldn’t really devote a lot of time to blogging. Now I can say that this year, I’ve finished TWO manuscripts for books! I’m editing and polishing both as well as I can to get them ready to query for publication. I’m documenting this entire journey on my new blog, and I’d love for you to follow me on it!

Sometime last year, I got more in tune with my two first loves: reading and writing. Really reading, and really writing, not just blogging and casually reading. From there, I started a book review channel,, that now has over 2,000 subscribers. I decided that I wanted to dive back in to my childhood dream of becoming an author, so I wrote my first manuscript in January of this year, and participated in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month, I wrote all about it here) and wrote the second manuscript in November.

I knew that eventually I’d have to change the name of this blog from The Redd Blogger to something else, probably my real name, especially since I am trying to become an author. I thought about changing the entire domain name and everything but figured it would just be easier to start up an entire new blog, especially since the focus is going to be different. Where this blog is more focused on my daily life and natural hair, IndiaHillWrites will still focus on those things, but with a heavy focus on books and writing. I don’t know how my old followers would feel about that, so I decided, along with the amazing design skills of Whitney Blake, to make a new one!

I didn’t want to get rid of this blog because there are so many memories on here, and I still REALLY love the design (done by Ashley from TheBlogSalon, she’s amazing as well!), so I’m keeping it up, and may even update it from time to time, but know that I will be posting more frequently on my new website. I’m trying to post every Wednesday, and if you’re a reader of TheReddBlogger, I’d love to see you there! You could follow me on Bloglovin’, if you’d like!

Thank you so much for following me on this journey on this blog. This was the place where I announced I was quitting my job to freelance full-time, the place I started the Twenty-Something series, participated in the city’s first Natural Hair pageant, and so, so much more! Here’s to more excitement, more good news, and more adventures.

honeymoon tour

Hello, strangers!

It’s been ages since I’ve posted in this blog, but like I’ve said in a few previous posts, I have some writing projects that have been taking up a lot of my time and I haven’t had time to post anything on here. Hopefully, I can update you guys really soon, maybe in the next month or so.

My blog was calling my name and I wanted to tell you guys about the Ariana Grande concert I went to a few weeks ago. If you’ve been reading for a while, you know that I LOVE Ariana Grande. I just adore her voice, it’s strong and confident. She’s definitely my favorite pop artist right now.

She brought her Honeymoon Tour to Charlotte, NC and we took a day trip, on a Tuesday, to see her perform. I was worried about seating but we ended up being closer than I thought we would be.

I’m glad to report that her voice did not disappointed. She sounded exactly like the record, hitting all the notes and even adding a few extra rifts and runs here and there. I’ve always said that some of Ariana’s singles don’t really showcase how strong her voice is, but she really gave it her all in each performance. We decided to join in on the ‘Arianator’ fun by buying some of Ariana’s signature cat ears.

honeymoon three

Her tour was definitely centered around vintage Hollywood Glamour. She had more than a few scenes were she was primping in front of a vanity.

honeymoon two

My favorite performances of the night were Bang Bang, Tattooed Heart and My Everything. I really hope she puts this concert on the DVD, because I loved all of the in-between videos and sketches.

If she’s coming to your city and your even a little bit interested in her music, you should check it out. Live entertainment is my favorite pastime, whether it’s a concert or a festival. It’s something about seeing your favorite artist bringing your favorite song to life! Have you been to any concerts lately, or are you anticipating an upcoming one? Let me know in the comments!

If you’ve been following my blog for more than a year, than you might remember that I  was in the very first Miss Naturally Crowned Carolina Pageant. I was so nervous about it and I almost talked myself out of doing it a few times because I was so intimidated and it was out of my comfort zone. I don’t consider myself to be extroverted or the ‘pageant’ girl, but I decided to do the pageant anyway to try something new. Through it all, I conquered a fear of mine, made lifelong bonds with the girls and the helpers and received the title of 2nd runner up! It was an amazing experience and I couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls to do it with.

Fast Forward to this year’s pageant. I was so excited to see the girls, how much the pageant has grown and to experience the pageant from the other side. I went with my best friend and we got to say a few encouraging words to the girls before the show started. I sat with the other contestants who did the pageant with me last year as we all watched the girls do their thing on stage!

Pageants are nerve-wrecking. Every time a girl walked up the mic I hoped that she wouldn’t trip over her dress or stumble over a question. Luckily, neither happened and everyone did wonderfully. This year, the pageant had a different twist as each contestant had to pitch a business proposal and open up the floor for questions by the judges. Talk about intimidating!

The evening gown portion was beautiful and really helped me see the girls personality and overall feel they were going for for the pageant. With Miss Naturally Crowned Carolina, your hairstyle during the evening wear counts A LOT towards your score.

I couldn’t help but get emotional as Chanelle did her final walk. There couldn’t have been a more perfect person to be the first EVER Miss Naturally Crowned Carolina, and I sincerely mean that! Chanelle is gorgeous, confident, humble and really put a lot into her reign this past year.

Although it was anybody’s game, I had a goodfeeling about who the girls who would place, I just didn’t know which order they would and who would actually win!

Congratulations to the NEW Miss Naturally Crowned Carolina Tra’Shon Howard, 1st runner up Alexis Gilmore, and 2nd runner up Brittany Jackson, you all did amazingly!

Miss Naturally Crowned Carolina 2014 and 2015 contestants!

Miss Naturally Crowned Carolina 2014 and 2015 contestants!

I never would have thought going natural in 2012 would open up so many opportunities and friendships, but I’m so glad it did.

This past Sunday, I had the pleasure of going to #PoseNPost Symposium, an intimate event hosted by singer Chrisette Michele and a few beauty bloggers and entrepreneurs, such as Brosia Malbrough, Lover4_Fashion, and Courtney Adeleye of The Mane Choice. I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to attend this event at first because of the price point, but luckily I was contacted about covering the event for the blog, and I couldn’t say no!

First of all, let me say that the overall ambience of this event was excellent. It was a chill vibe filled with young women ready to learn about using social media to build their brand, network with their peers and just meet some new friends. I’ve been to more than a few networking events where the air felt forced or competitive, but at this one I could honestly say that I held a genuine conversation with everyone that I talked to. Every person I smiled at smiled back (this doesn’t always happen) and everyone went out of their way to be friendly, exchange business cards, or just compliment one another!

Chrisette started the event by singing a few songs (her voice is excellent by the way) and had everyone play an icebreaker where we met up with someone we didn’t know, took an “US-ie” and posted it on instagram after creating our very own hashtag.

Chrisette then opened up the floor for questions, and everyone had the chance to have their questions answered about everything from building your personal brand, to finding your personal asthetic for your social media handles (my question!), to figuring out when to make the leap into full-time enterpreneurship. It was great to hear all of the ladies horror stories and accomplishments, to know that they went through struggles to get to wear they are today.

At the end of the event, we could all take a picture with Chrisette Michele, and my boyfriend caught this candid moment of me being goofy (of course) as Chrisette complimented me on my pants. Rob took all of the photos by the way.. I told him he might have a hidden talent on his hands : )

It was blessing to have the media pass, because I am SO glad that I got to attend this event. I will definitely attend in the future, whether or not I have one. If she’s on her way to your city, I suggest that you grab a ticket fast!!

I definitely need to get back on some type of blogging routine around here again! AT LEAST once a week. Sheesh, I only blogged once last month! I can’t do that in March 😀

What’s New: I got a new job! So if you include Freelance Writing and my part-time, that’s THREE jobs. Definitely going to have to have a Work/Life balance plan. We don’t want to be burned out like we were in 2014. I’m excited about this new job, though. I will be doing the social media and marketing for a certain restaurant that shares the same values as I do and it’s the same one that invented the Chicken Sandwich 😉 I haven’t worked in a restaurant since high school, so this is a little out of my comfort zone. But, I will be more on the PR side, so we’ll see how this goes!

Also, I’m looking to do a rebranding of this site very soon. As much as I love TheReddBlogger brand or the REDD brand in general, I think I want a website that reflects every part of me and my writing. Maybe it will be just my name instead of a whole new idenitity. I also want this blog to be more lifestyle (I think it’s been that way for  a while, anyway). I already know exactly who I want to rebrand my blog, I just need to get a clearer idea of what I want before I contact her!

In terms of writing, blogging has been taking a serious back seat to this huge writing project that I’ve been working on for months. I don’t want to say too much yet, but I will keep you guys posted. It’s definitely a tough project but I think it will be well worth it. I’m so excited!!!

What’s been up with you guys? I know some of my northern readers have been battling the super cold, while I was hoping to see some snow before Spring. Tell me in the comments!

Oh, and the winner of the Liberte Yogurt contest is Annette Prejean! Congratulations! I’ve already sent her an email and she has 48 hours to respond before I pick another one! 🙂

yogurt yogurt

I work from home a lot, and usually that means getting up, getting mentally/spiritually ready for the day, pouring a cup of coffee and getting straight on the computer. Sounds good enough, but there’s one important thing missing from this equation.. breakfast!

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and most of the time, I honestly forget to eat it. I’m not usually in the mainframe to cook breakfast in the morning and would probably be more inclined to eat it if it was something tasty, but quick. Well, I found that perfect thing!

Liberte Yogurt is SO good, you guys. You can get it at any Publix Grocery store and it’s only a $1 a cup. My two favorites are the Liberte Caramel and the Liberte Mediterranee appuccino flavors. I love mixing in the regular ingredients like granola and fruit, but one random thing I really like to mix in my yogurt is…. honey! Especially with a cappuccino flavored yogurt, it really makes it tastes just like coffee!

I know some of y’all would love a grab and go breakfast just like this, so I’m giving a way $15 on Paypal to buy this coffee for yourself! The Publix I went to was selling this yogurt 10 for $10, so this is really a steal!

In the meantime, I’m also giving away some coupons  for this yogurt as well. Make sure you grab a couple and tell your friends!

Don’t forget to enter below and tell me what’s your favorite quick and easy breakfast treat!

Liberte Yogurt Giveaway

*Thank you so much to Liberte Yogurt for sponsoring this post. As usual, all opinions are my own!

Hello, readers!

OMG I feel like it’s been so long since I’ve done a proper blog post! To go from trying to post 5 days a week to .. once a month since like a huge jump but for good reason 🙂

I’m just reevaluating myself as a writer. I want to write more purposefully and when I REALLY have things I want to say, not just filler posts that I don’t really care about. Plus, I’m working on a huge writing project that I can’t talk about yet, but it’s taking up a lot of  my time.

I wanted to check in with you guys and see how you’ve been doing? I also wanted to let you know that I’ve been PUBLISHED in a real, physical magazine! I’ve been published before, in IMARA Woman Magazine through my internship and through other blogs and e-magazines but this is the first time where I’ve pitched, wrote an article for, and got an article published in a physical magazine from freelancing alone. Yay!

This magazine is called Sesi, it’s basically the Seventeen Magazine for black girls. Not to say that Seventeen isn’t for everyone, but you know how they have articles that teenage girls of color can’t exactly relate to? This is a new magazine that covers that medium and I’m so excited to be working with them.

My word for 2015 is Purpose, so I’m only writing about things and for publications that mean something.  I had to take a break from A LOT of my freelance work from last year because, like I said, this writing project is taking up a lot of my time, but writing this column for Sesi is something that I wanted to keep doing. It’s called “Breaking Down the Wallflower”, basically giving dating advice to the shy girl’s in high school!

Check it out, you can order a copy or subscribe to this magazine here. Also, let me know how your year has been starting off! Great, I hope! 🙂

Hi everyone!! I know that TheReddBlogger has been super quiet for the past few months. I just wanted to let you all know what’s been going on over here!

I’m still freelancing and to avoid Cabin Fever, I’ve picked up a part-time job in one of the most beautiful women’s stores ever. Just one look at the picture and you should be able to tell what it is 😉 This job is so refreshing for my mind because I’m away from my phone and social media for my entire shift. This helps me recharge for when I have to spend hours at a computer doing articles or blog posts. Also, I get to actually interact with people in real life rather than just on social networks. Plus, how can you not get inspired from this place!

Also, starting next month, I might not be posting as frequently as i was in Sept/Oct because I have a big writing project coming up that I want to put ALL of my writing energy into. I’m prepping for it this month so that’s why the posts have been super sparse :/ To make up for it though, I’m going to be having a lot of guest posts and checking in from time to time to see how Y’ALL are doing! I can’t wait to reveal what this writing project is either!

It’s Christmastime and I just love how it makes everyone in an instantly good mood as we celebrate the birth of Jesus. I love the music, the hot cocoa , the movies, the familytime and everything else that comes with it. What’s that one present on your wish list this year? I think this I’ve spent more on giving Christmas gifts than ever before and it’s actually a good feeling, because I know everyone will love what they get!

I hope everybody is enjoying the holiday cheer! Please tell me what one gift you can’t wait to give, or receive! I’d love to hear from you!

5 rude things

One day last week I was thinking of some of the rude things that people said (and still say) to me on a daily basis. Most of the time, the comments aren’t meant to be offensive, but they still leave me giving the commenter a side-eye. I thought it would be fun to poke some fun at the rude things people say, and I am SUPER interested in hearing yours, so please share below!

1. You look so much better with your hair straightened! You should wear it that way all the time! I love wearing my hair straightened from time to time, but telling me that I look better that way is rude, because my hair is not naturally straight! It’s one thing to say someone looks better with short hair, or long hair, or bangs, but don’t tell me I look better when I alter my hair texture!

2. You look tired/sick. Are you tired/sick? I have naturally dark circles under my eyes, and when I decide to skip the concealer for a day, people ask me if I’m tired or sick. One time, I literally blank stared someone when they told me “I looked tired”. I came to work feeling so refreshed! lol. I know people mean well, and they are probably saying this out of concern. But sometimes, this is offensive, especially if I feel super rested and healthy!

3. You don’t act/look/sound black. I used to get this all the time in middle school. Some of my friends of different races said told me this as a compliment, while my black friends said it to be condescending. Either way, it’s pretty darn offensive!

4. You’re so dingy! Another thing I used to get in middle school (and still do every now and then!) I’m a naturally goofy person, and I’m pretty sure this what people mean when they say this, but dingy means “empty headed and silly!”.

5. You only [insert accomplishment here] because you’re light skinned! I’ve written countless amounts of articles and blog posts about this one, so I won’t say much. I HATE when I work hard for something and someone assumes that I was only received it because I have light skin.

Honorable Mention: You’re getting THICK!  I wasn’t going to include this because sometimes when someone is telling you you’re getting thick, it’s a compliment, basically saying you’re curvy: you have wide hips and a big butt (and who doesn’t want the same shape as Beyonce’?). It’s ALL about the connotation. If someone says it in a snoody way, they may really mean “You’re getting fat.” I don’t usually care when people say this because I love my figure for the most part, but if I’ve expressed that I’d want to lose a few pounds, then it can get a little annoying (especially if it’s a backhanded compliment.)
This is all in good fun! This blog is geared towards positivity and I’m poking fun at the odd things people say to me. Now, I’d LOVE to hear yours! Sound off in the comments!
