Clare Brown Menelley is a fashion blogger and the Social Media mastermind behind Maybelline and Essie! I have been following Clare for months because her fashion sense is so creative, but not TOO far gone to the point where I wouldn’t be able to recreate her outfits myself.

With the help of her husband, who takes most of the amazing photos you see on her blog, Clare has developed the fun and super-inspiring ClaraBelleBlog. I had the chance to talk with Clare about life, advice on breaking into the fashion industry, and beauty tips!

How did you get your start in working for such a huge makeup brand?
When I first moved to NYC I got a job at a digital agency working in entertainment. At that job I learned that I loved the digital side of managing brands, but I have always wanted to work in fashion or beauty. So I made the transition to working at an agency that specialized in beauty — and I have worked in beauty ever since!

What is your staple makeup product?
Blush. Blush is instant prettiness. It wakes up the face and makes you look alive.

You do a great job at putting pieces from different outfits together and creating a whole new look. What do you think is the “essential” piece every girl needs in her wardrobe to pull everything together? (Besides an LBD)
I would say there are a few: a good bra, a crisp white button down, a great pair of jeans, and a great blazer. I would also say that if you want to minimize your wardrobe, but still make it stretch, start by culling down on color and only buy things in neutral colors. You can mix and match black, white and grey clothing for months!

Besides being the shooting photos for your blog together, what’s your favorite you like to do with your husband?
We love exploring NYC and trying new restaurants. We eat out a lot (pretty much every meal — eek!), and we always try to go to someplace different each time.

What’s the best thing about being a “fashion blogger”?
I love that I have a visual diary of my life and my personal style evolution. I have been blogging for a while and I think it is pretty cool that big milestones like moving NYC, getting engaged, and getting married are all documented on my blog. I hope someday in the future my children will be able to go back through my blog and get an idea of who I was ‘back in the day’.

One thing most of your readers don’t know about you:
I am actually very introverted! I come across as super outgoing and bubbly, but I prefer to be alone. If it wasn’t for my husband and a few patient friends, I would probably never leave the house, haha. I feel like I am at my best when I am alone. It is weird, I know, to have something as public as a blog but be so private at the same time.

Do you have any advice for girls looking to work for a makeup brand or become a fashion blogger?
I would say that the Internet has made the world a very small place, and people are a lot nicer than you may think. If you want a certain job, or want to learn from a certain person, connect with them! Don’t be afraid to reach out to people you admire and learn from them. Trust me, they will be flattered.
