Bonnie Bakhtiari is the beauty behind b is for bonnie design and shop. Bonnie works with other entrepreneurs like herself to help them build their brand and define the core of their business. She also creates BEAUTIFUL prints!
I found Bonnie through Instagram and was instantly drawn to how bright and inviting her pictures were. Her blog posts are always positive and God-filled. I had the pleasure of talking to Bonnie about pursing entrepreneurship, balancing work/home life, and more!
What did you want to do before starting BisforBonnie Design?
Before I took b is for bonnie design full-time, I planned on pursuing a career in non-profit communications, actually! I’ve always had a heart for non-profit work and I wanted to use my love of the written word, social media management and PR to help others. I started b is for bonnie design during my final college semester and took it full-time after my wedding that summer. Once I got a taste of working one-on-one with my branding clients, I knew that I’d found a position that gave me a chance to help creative business owners build strong brands AND feed my passion for design. Totally a win-win situation. 🙂
Was the transition from journalism to BisforBonnie an easy one for you?
Of course, switching from one career field to another always comes with a few adjustments, but I’d have to say that the transition was fairly smooth. My journalism experience not only prepared me for crafting strong, succinct copy for my website and brand messaging, but it also gave me a solid appreciation of working on deadline. I like to think that learning how to design and layout broadsheets during my freshman year really laid the foundation for my current love of graphic design!
What, in your opinion, is the best thing about being an entrepreneur?
Oh, that’s a tough one! I love the flexibility that comes with being able to set your own schedule. My husband is in the Air Force and since we move about every two years, it really comes in handy having the ability to set my own hours or take my business with me whenever we move. But I’d have to say the absolute best thing about being an entrepreneur is the endless opportunities it provides. Whenever a big new idea strikes, you have the freedom to incorporate it into your business should you see fit. A healthy business is always growing and constantly refining itself, which gives you plenty of opportunities to implement new ideas or revise tried and true practices. The sky truly is the limit!
How do you get your instagram photos to always look so perfect!
Never underestimate the power of good lighting! I always use natural light for my photos and do any touch ups in the VSCO app. Heavy photo filters aren’t the best fit for my personal aesthetic so I stick to making slight exposure changes or sharpening a photo slightly. The simpler the better in my opinion.
What’s the best piece of advice you have for someone looking to make the leap into entrepreneurship?
Go for it! No amount of market research, budgeting or planning will ever fully prepare you for that huge leap, so don’t waste months or years stalling on your dreams. Life is too short to let the fear of the unknown hold you back. If you’re passionate about your business venture and fear is the only thing standing in your way, then just take the plunge! It will be so worth it in the end.
When you aren’t designing, what do you do for fun?
You can find me cooking dinner with my husband or sitting on our back porch with a glass of wine and snuggling our golden retriever! Work will take over your life if you let it, so I make it a point to spend as much time as possible with those I love after my office hours.
When you are feeling challenged or stressed about your work, how do you handle it?
I find it’s best to get some physical distance from the stressor or problem. Sometimes just moving to a different room helps but, if all else fails, taking a few minutes to go outside for some fresh air really helps. Removing myself from an overwhelming situation helps me gain some new perspective on the issue, and often gives me the time to think of a new solution!
How do you make sure your work doesn’t affect your personal relationships?
I try to be intentional about balancing work and my personal life. Although I love talking about my current work projects with my husband or family, I never let those topics dominate our conversations. I have set office hours in place to protect my off time and ensure that I have the time for dinners at home with my husband or a night out with friends. My office hours apply to emails, appointments, and phone calls so I make sure to disable any work-related notifications on my phone after the end of the business day. The last thing I want is to receive an email notification in the middle of date night! With a little bit of self-discipline, I find it’s totally possible to have a healthy work/life balance.
Do you have a favorite print in the BisForBonnie shop?
How about three favorite prints? There’s a trio of prints in my shop that reflect my family’s core mantra – “Live joyfully. Love fiercely. Give grace freely.” I find those reminders so encouraging and they help me focus in one what truly matters whenever I’m having a bad day or feeling discouraged. My hope is that they help other families focus on living authentic and intentional lives, too.
