Hello, readers!

OMG I feel like it’s been so long since I’ve done a proper blog post! To go from trying to post 5 days a week to .. once a month since like a huge jump but for good reason 🙂

I’m just reevaluating myself as a writer. I want to write more purposefully and when I REALLY have things I want to say, not just filler posts that I don’t really care about. Plus, I’m working on a huge writing project that I can’t talk about yet, but it’s taking up a lot of  my time.

I wanted to check in with you guys and see how you’ve been doing? I also wanted to let you know that I’ve been PUBLISHED in a real, physical magazine! I’ve been published before, in IMARA Woman Magazine through my internship and through other blogs and e-magazines but this is the first time where I’ve pitched, wrote an article for, and got an article published in a physical magazine from freelancing alone. Yay!

This magazine is called Sesi, it’s basically the Seventeen Magazine for black girls. Not to say that Seventeen isn’t for everyone, but you know how they have articles that teenage girls of color can’t exactly relate to? This is a new magazine that covers that medium and I’m so excited to be working with them.

My word for 2015 is Purpose, so I’m only writing about things and for publications that mean something.  I had to take a break from A LOT of my freelance work from last year because, like I said, this writing project is taking up a lot of my time, but writing this column for Sesi is something that I wanted to keep doing. It’s called “Breaking Down the Wallflower”, basically giving dating advice to the shy girl’s in high school!

Hi everyone!! I know that TheReddBlogger has been super quiet for the past few months. I just wanted to let you all know what’s been going on over here!

I’m still freelancing and to avoid Cabin Fever, I’ve picked up a part-time job in one of the most beautiful women’s stores ever. Just one look at the picture and you should be able to tell what it is 😉 This job is so refreshing for my mind because I’m away from my phone and social media for my entire shift. This helps me recharge for when I have to spend hours at a computer doing articles or blog posts. Also, I get to actually interact with people in real life rather than just on social networks. Plus, how can you not get inspired from this place!

Also, starting next month, I might not be posting as frequently as i was in Sept/Oct because I have a big writing project coming up that I want to put ALL of my writing energy into. I’m prepping for it this month so that’s why the posts have been super sparse :/ To make up for it though, I’m going to be having a lot of guest posts and checking in from time to time to see how Y’ALL are doing! I can’t wait to reveal what this writing project is either!

It’s Christmastime and I just love how it makes everyone in an instantly good mood as we celebrate the birth of Jesus. I love the music, the hot cocoa , the movies, the familytime and everything else that comes with it. What’s that one present on your wish list this year? I think this I’ve spent more on giving Christmas gifts than ever before and it’s actually a good feeling, because I know everyone will love what they get!

5 rude things

 

One day last week I was thinking of some of the rude things that people said (and still say) to me on a daily basis. Most of the time, the comments aren’t meant to be offensive, but they still leave me giving the commenter a side-eye. I thought it would be fun to poke some fun at the rude things people say, and I am SUPER interested in hearing yours, so please share below!

1. You look so much better with your hair straightened! You should wear it that way all the time! I love wearing my hair straightened from time to time, but telling me that I look better that way is rude, because my hair is not naturally straight! It’s one thing to say someone looks better with short hair, or long hair, or bangs, but don’t tell me I look better when I alter my hair texture!

2. You look tired/sick. Are you tired/sick? I have naturally dark circles under my eyes, and when I decide to skip the concealer for a day, people ask me if I’m tired or sick. One time, I literally blank stared someone when they told me “I looked tired”. I came to work feeling so refreshed! lol. I know people mean well, and they are probably saying this out of concern. But sometimes, this is offensive, especially if I feel super rested and healthy!

3. You don’t act/look/sound black. I used to get this all the time in middle school. Some of my friends of different races said told me this as a compliment, while my black friends said it to be condescending. Either way, it’s pretty darn offensive!

4. You’re so dingy! Another thing I used to get in middle school (and still do every now and then!) I’m a naturally goofy person, and I’m pretty sure this what people mean when they say this, but dingy means “empty headed and silly!”. 

5. You only [insert accomplishment here] because you’re light skinned! I’ve written countless amounts of articles and blog posts about this one, so I won’t say much. I HATE when I work hard for something and someone assumes that I was only received it because I have light skin. 

Honorable Mention: You’re getting THICK!  I wasn’t going to include this because sometimes when someone is telling you you’re getting thick, it’s a compliment, basically saying you’re curvy: you have wide hips and a big butt (and who doesn’t want the same shape as Beyonce’?). It’s ALL about the connotation. If someone says it in a snoody way, they may really mean “You’re getting fat.” I don’t usually care when people say this because I love my figure for the most part, but if I’ve expressed that I’d want to lose a few pounds, then it can get a little annoying (especially if it’s a backhanded compliment.)
This is all in good fun! This blog is geared towards positivity and I’m poking fun at the odd things people say to me. Now, I’d LOVE to hear yours! Sound off in the comments!

Happy Wednesday, readers! Things have been a little quieter on the blog lately (I talk more about this in my Turning 23 post, sometimes you just need to unplug from the internet, you know?) but I wanted to check back in this week with my goals for the month and talk about how I did last month!

Okay, now on to the goals:

October’s Goals:

Lose five pounds: Half a strikethrough. I lost three more pounds, which makes a total of six since I started trying to lose weight. However, I’m still about ten pounds shy of my ideal weight goal! I have to admit, while I’ve been doing good with exercising and drinking more water, my diet took a toll last month. Way too much birthday food!

Get a part-time job that’s away from the computer: I will talk more about this in a later post! 🙂

Do a 3-day Juice cleanse: Okay, I STILL haven’t done this! Now, I’m thinking about just waiting until after the holidays.

Get published in a physical, print magazine. Half a strikethrough, and you’ll see why in a later post 😉

Brainstorm on a good gift for Rob’s birthday. Mission accomplished!!

Change my hairstyle . I’m loving this bob I have right now, but it’s getting colder and now I want something longer 🙂 I love experimenting!!

Okay, now on to November’s Goals! I honestly haven’t thought about them until JUST now:

Do something un-introverted: I want to have dinner with friends, go to a party or SOMETHING. I’m such a hermit crab, y’all.

Get another credit card: This is something I’ve been meaning to do for a while, and I definitely want to take that step this month.

Write (not blog) more. I love blogging, I really do, but creative writing is my passion. I really want to get back into it this month, no excuses.

Only three goals! I don’t want to stress myself out and I think there is room to grow in each of these. What are your goals for this month? I’d love to hear them, seriously!

A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of listening to Chris Rock’s mom, Rose Rock, speak at a gala hosted by DeAmor Magazine. The gala was lovely and the Hors d’oeuvres were delicious! (I’m such a foodie).

Miss Rock was everything you’d expect Chris Rock’s mom to be and more– hilarious, stylish, and spunky. She’s 70 years old! She offered great tips about raising children (she’s raised 27 children! 10 of her own and 17 foster children) pursuing your dreams, and loving yourself, knowing your worth and true love.

Would you believe that at first Miss Rock didn’t support Chris Rock’s dream of being a comedian? She said he got his start in the comedy world through a dare! A few of his friends dared him to perform at a local comedy venue and the manager thought he was so funny, he was booked a spot!

She opened the floor up for Question and Answer, and I asked did she think she was anything like the way she was portrayed in Chris’s show, Everybody Hates Chris. Watch the video below to find out what she said!

Happy October, y’all! I’ve said it so many times before but I LOVE the month of October. I might be partial because it’s my birthday month, but I also love the smell of pumpkin and FAIR FOOD! Let’s see how far I’ve come with the September goals and what my goals for this month are!

 Lose 10 pounds– This has half a strikethrough because I lost like 3 or 4 pounds, haha! I’m pretty good with exercising, but dieting is harder than I thought, you really have to be intentional about it! My clothes are fitting different in a good way, so I don’t understand how I ONLY lost 3 pounds. Curse you, scale…

Do a 3-day juice cleanse– I really want to do one but I have NO idea where to begin. I was thinking bout either the Blueprint Cleanse or the Suja Juice Cleanse. Has anyone ever tried either??

Buy a newer, better camera.

Increase blog revenue by 50%

Become more CONSISTENT with going to church on Sundays

Collab with another blogger. Another half-strikethrough! I’ve definitely been doing more community building this month, and I’m collaborating with 6 talented women for the Choosing Joy Giveaway, but I really want to actually do a joint post with another blogger. Any takers? 🙂

Okay, now on to the October goals!

Lose five pounds (I’m still trying, y’all! But, fair food! :/)

Get a part-time job: I told myself if I was going to really pursue blogging/freelancing wholeheartedly that I would need to get a part-time job. I’m already an introvert, and spending so much time by myself, looking at a computer isn’t good. I need social interaction!

Brainstorm on a good gift for Rob’s Birthday. My bf’s birthday is 8 days after mine!

Change my hairstyle 🙂 I LOVE changing my hair in the cooler months and this year is no different!

Happy first week of Autumn! Fall is my 2nd favorite season of the year (mostly because my birthday is next month!) I love when it starts to cool down after a hot, hot summer.

In honor of fall starting, I’m sharing five essentials that every girl needs for her fall handbag!

1. A planner: Now, I have two planners: One that stays on my desk and a smaller one that goes around with me in my handbag or clutch. I’m always making to-do lists and need to keep track of blog posts, networking events and dates I’ve made with friends, so this is perfect!

2. U by Kotex Pads: Okay, I’ve raved about these things enough for y’all to know that these are my go-to pads. The wrapping is so colorful and you don’t get that “pamper-y” feel when you wear them.

Who’s going back to college this week, or soon? It’s been a year and some months since I’ve graduated! I remember moving in to Claflin University in 2009 and being so excited and nervous. I also remember having to run to the store because I forgot a few minor things that you don’t really think about. Sure, you remember to bring a TV, microwave and refrigerator (which is easy to split the cost for when you have a roommate) but what about that other random stuff that you need but don’t think about? Incoming freshman, this is for you!

10. A mattress cover: Let’s be honest, college dorm room mattresses aren’t the softest. I suggest investing in a really good mattress cover. You’ll use it all year at least and it will provide extra comfort when you sleep!

9. Desk Lamp: This is especially important if you have a roommate. Your roommate may go to sleep earlier than you when you’re still trying to read or study. Having a lamp on your desk or buy your bed helps to not disturb your roommate with that bright overhead light, and it’s easier to reach over and turn off when YOU’RE about to go to sleep!

8. Kleenex: Dorm rooms are drafty sometimes and catching a cold is sometimes inevitable. I suggest a box of Kleenex, particularly these cute chevron ones, for your desk. You can find these at Wal-Mart. They’re cute enough to become room decor on top of being super practical!

7. Shower Caddy: Whether you have your own bathroom or you share one with the girls on your hall, a shower caddy is essential for a dorm room. This is where you’ll put your washcloths, body wash, razors, shampoo, etc without having to lug all of that in your hands on the way to the restroom. This is also  helpful way to keep track of your own items if you and your roommate use a lot of similar looking products.

Have you ever packed for a vacation and double, even triple-checked your luggage before you hit the road, only to find out that you forgot to pack the most random (but essential) items? Here are 10 items that I’ve forgotten to pack for a vacay. Hopefully this helps you–take out your pen and travel check list!

TRAVEL ESSENTIALS

1. A good read– You may not think you want to do a lot of reading on vacation, but think about that long car/plane ride, waiting in the airport, or even something to read while you’re laying out on the beach. A good beach-y novel or magazine poolside just spells r-e-l-a-x-a-t-i-o-n. Plus, you don’t want to spend the ENTIRE ride or drive draining your iPod battery. Which, brings me to my next point:

2. A Car Charger. There is nothing worse that being stuck on the road with a dead phone or tablet for hours to go until you get to the hotel. That isn’t even safe! Make sure you have your car charger handy!

3. Pads! Okay, let’s face it. SOMETIMES when you’re on vacation that time of the month surprises you. You don’t want to be caught off guard! The best pads I would recommend for this situation are U by Kotex 3D Capture Core, because they catch everything and you can still wear your cute outfits for a night on the town and not have to worry about any accidents!

4. An Extra Swimsuit: You can never pack TOO many swimsuit for a beach vacation. You never know how many times you want to hit the pool or swim in the ocean, and then this leaves room for error: maybe a bottle of perfume bursted all over for bikini top, or you lost the string to your swimsuit bottoms! (uh-oh!)
